If you've made the decision to get microdermabrasion done, it’s an exciting step in your skin care routine. But there are a few details to know, as well as some to avoid, both before and after your appointment. If it’s your first time getting this treatment done, Lauren A. Daman, MD, PC in Hartford, CT, shares some of her top tips she provides patients with.

3 Tips for Pre-Microdermabrasion

1. Do Not Exfoliate 3 Days Prior

Exfoliating will remove the outer layer of skin, not allowing the microdermabrasion treatment to remove that layer and resurface deeper ones. Avoid any abrasive creams or serums that may exfoliate the skin.

2. Avoid Waxing or Tanning Skin

Because microdermabrasion resurfaces the skin, you’ll need to hold off on waxing or tanning the area that’s going to be treated at least for two to three weeks. It’ll ensure the skin’s layers aren’t tampered with and offer the dermatologist a clean base to work with.

3. Thoroughly Wash Face & Neck Before Appointment

microdermabrasionIt’s important to have clean skin prior to your visit so the dermatologist can start the treatment with a clean surface. Remove excess oils and make sure it’s a gentle cleanser.

3 Tips for Post-Microdermabrasion

1. Stay Hydrated & Clean

The new skin needs time to heal, so it’s important to use a gentle cleanser that won’t be harsh and keep the area moisturized as it heals.

2. Avoid Too Much Sun for Next Week

Because UV rays can damage the skin and slow down the healing process, its best to use a high SPF, wear a hat, or keep the area out of the sun as much as possible.

3. Never Pick or Scratch the Area

Picking, scratching or any other type of skin damage could hinder how well the area heals. Although the area may be itchy, gently pat it instead so you don’t create damage.
