Birds survive winter much like we do.

1. They shelter themselves from winds by hiding behind branches, limbs, in roosting boxes or natural cavities. 
2. They also eat, a lot! Birds need foods high in fat and proteins. Black Oil Sunflower seeds, mixed nuts, and Suet are ideal for winter feeders.
3. Down feathers are great insulators, most good winter coats contain them. Birds will go through a late season molt and produce more down feathers to minimize heat loss.
4. Water is another component key to their survival. Even though they can get some water from melted snow, it takes badly needed energy to do it. A heated birdbath provides essential water needs at a crucial time of year.
