Sump pumps are critical during periods of heavy rain or ice and snow. They pump out excess moisture from low-lying areas of your home, such as your basement, saving your property from mold, water damage, and other problems. Unfortunately, sump pumps, like any other appliances in your home, eventually break. It’s important to stay on top of maintenance and repairs so it works precisely when you need it. Below are a few problems that call for a new unit.

How to Tell It’s Time to Replace Your Sump Pump

1. Making Strange Noises

Sump pumps aren’t noise-free appliances. It’s important to note, however, which sounds are normal, and which indicate a problem. If you hear any rattling, grinding, or thumping, call a plumber.

2. Cycling On & Off More Than Usual

sump pumpIs your sump pump cycling on and off more than usual? While it could be something simple like the float switch, it could also be a more complex problem, such as a too-shallow sump basin. Either way, the constant cycling will burn out the motor.

3. Running Longer Than Usual

A sump pump that starts running longer than usual may not have the power it needs for the volume of water it’s pumping or the distance it must pump the water. Having a plumber install a new sump pump with the capacity to handle larger volumes or greater distances will address the problem.

4. Doesn't Turn On When Needed

In most cases, this happens when the float switch gets stuck, or part of it is broken. Releasing the float switch from wherever it’s stuck may resolve the problem, but if not, schedule an inspection.

5. Nearing 10 Years Old

Sump pumps are designed to last about a decade, and more economical models have even shorter life spans. If yours is over six years old, have it checked every few months by a skilled plumber. Doing so will ensure you catch potential problems before your finished basement gets flooded.

Homeowners shouldn’t handle sump pump repairs or replacements themselves. If you’re experiencing one of the problems listed above, call the expert plumbers at Pro-Fetick Plumbing.
