Meditation is one of the most effective ways to combat stress. Engaging in the practice on a regular basis makes it easier to accept life’s challenges, instead of simply worrying about them. However, this transformative exercise isn’t just a stress-reliever—it can also unleash your creativity. Here are just a few of the ways mindfulness will help you become a better thinker and artist.

1. Break Through Routine Patterns of Thinking

MeditationMindfulness meditation involves observing your current experience without trying to change or judge it. This often means “watching” your thoughts, as if they were clouds passing in the sky. If a stressful thought comes along, you don’t engage with it—you accept it. Over time, people who meditate find it much easier to break out of thought patterns that don’t serve them. This also gives you the chance to uncover new, creative thought patterns.

2. Ease the Burden of Stress

Most people start meditating because they want a healthy way to cope with stress. Not long after they begin, they start to reap the rewards of a low-stress lifestyle, such as increased happiness, more energy, and clearer thinking.

Reducing stress is also good for creativity. The mind doesn’t think creatively when it’s stressed. The less anxious you feel throughout the day, the easier it is to think outside the box.

3. Ground You in the Moment

When you learn to be mindful of the present moment, you develop the ability to pay attention to what’s happening. This benefits your creative side in two ways. First, it allows you to be more in tune with the constant sources of potential creative inspiration you encounter on a daily basis. Second, it helps you focus on the creative endeavor at hand.
