Finding the right professional to fix your car is challenging. While some mechanics might not have your best interests at heart, there are plenty of qualified and reliable ones. The key to finding the best in your area is knowing the right questions to ask. If you’ve never hired an auto repair technician before, here’s what you should ask each candidate during your search.

What to Ask Before Hiring a Mechanic

1. Are You ASE-Certified?

Reputable mechanics should be certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). This non-profit organization sets rigorous standards for automotive technicians who want to be certified. First, they must have at least two years of experience before receiving certification, but not before passing a comprehensive exam. Certified mechanics must retake the test every five years to prove they’re keeping up with the developments in the industry.

2. What Are Your Specializations?

Even if your mechanic is experienced in all aspects of auto repair, they probably have a specialty or two. For example, they might do exceptional work for certain makes and models, or they might specialize in auto body repair. Ideally, their strengths would align with your needs.

3. Will You Put Me In Touch With 3 Recent References?

mechanicIf you don’t know much about your auto mechanic, ask for references from the last six months. These should be previous customers who can tell you about their experience working with this professional.

4. What Guarantees or Warranties Do You Offer?

Your mechanic should offer some sort of guarantee or warranty on their work to prove they’re accountable. Note that there is a difference between parts warranties, which vary by manufacturer, and labor warranties, which your auto repair shop has control over.

5. Can I Have a Written Estimate?

Before agreeing to any work, request a written estimate from your mechanic. If you’re unfamiliar with the local market rate, obtain quotes from multiple auto shops. Written estimates are essential, as they allow you to compare prices and give you a physical record to refer to. You can’t hold a professional accountable for a phone quote — but you can with a written document.
