Weather-stripping helps your windows work more efficiently, creating a tighter seal between the interior and exterior conditions and temperatures. Installing weather-stripping is usually a fairly straightforward process—so long as you have the right materials and equipment. Below, Ideal Supplies in Covington, KY, discusses how to install the perfect window weather-stripping. This hardware store has been serving the Ludlow, Kentucky, and Greater Cincinnati areas for more than 50 years, and can deliver the expertise and supplies you need to handle any job.

For Casement Windows

  1. hardware storeOpen the window, and clean the window stops with warm, soapy water; let them dry completely.
  2. Measure and cut your foam tape to fit all sides of the stops.
  3. Peel away the adhesive backing on the tape, and press it firmly onto the outside of the stops.

For Double-Hung Windows

  1. Clean the bottom of the window sash with warm, soapy water; let it dry completely.
  2. Measure and cut the foam tape to fit along the window sash.
  3. Peel away the adhesive and apply it to the sash; press firmly to ensure a tight seal.
  4. After washing the window jamb with warm, soapy water and allowing it to dry, measure and cut the V-channel—also called the V-strip or tension seal—into two strips, each one inch longer than the height of the window sash.
  5. Remove the adhesive backing and maneuver each V-channel between the sash stiles and the jamb; apply pressure for a tight seal.
  6. Now, you'll need to hammer in some finish nails to secure the V-channel. Use enough to make certain the seal will stay in place, being mindful that nails need to be hammered in all the way for the window to open and close effectively.
  7. Wash the back of the bottom window sash with warm, soapy water, and let dry.
  8. Measure and cut a strip of V-channel the width of the sash.
  9. Raise the sash a few inches, peel off the adhesive backing, and press the V-channel into the back of the sash, ensuring it is even with the top.
