In the midst of the winter season, a faulty HVAC system can be a homeowner’s worst nightmare. When the system suddenly crashes, it can leave your family feeling uncomfortable and even lead to illness if not corrected right away. Before you call your local HVAC company, however, try troubleshooting the problem on your own so that you can narrow down the source of the problem and point your contractor in the right direction.

4 HVAC Issues & How to Troubleshoot Them

1. Lack of Airflow

If you notice there is no HVACairflow coming from your vents, it’s most likely due to a clogged filter. Pull these out and inspect it for signs of debris and allergens that are covering the mesh holes. If there is no way for air to seep through, you can replace the filter yourself or call your local HVAC team for help.

2. Low Temperatures

If your heat won’t kick on, it could indicate several problems. However, you should first check the furnace to ensure the gas valve is turned on. If it’s been turned off, call your gas company.

If the gas is on, it’s likely an indication of a problem with your thermostat. Set the thermostat to a particular temperature, and if it doesn’t begin to produce heat in a minute or two, you’ll need to call for HVAC repairs right away.

3. Constantly Running System

If your system won’t turn off, the thermostat may be set too high and is incapable of reaching the temperature you’ve indicated. Try turning the temperature to a more reasonable, lower number and your system should slow down. If it continues to run, you’ll need to bring in a professional to take a closer look and diagnose the root of the problem.

4. Strange Sounds

If you hear a constant screeching, squealing, or garbling sound coming from your heater, it is likely a loose part or a lack of fluid in the system. If you can see an exterior part has come loose, relay this information to your contractor. If you can’t readily identify the problem from a quick look, your HVAC technician may need to look inside to understand the severity of the issue.
