If you’re considering a dental implant to replace a missing or damaged tooth, you may be wondering exactly what to expect during the procedure. You’ll be a lot more comfortable if you know in advance what the procedure is like and how long you can expect your recovery to take. Below are the basic steps of the dental implant process and what you can expect along the way.

Basic Steps of a Dental Implant Procedure

Preparation

To evaluate your bone and gum condition, your dentist will first do a thorough exam and take panoramic X-rays or a CT scan of your mouth. Then, an impression of your mouth will be made to provide a mold of your teeth and gums. To do this, your dentist will fill a dental tray with a solution and ask you to bite down. The liquid will set after a few minutes and become a flexible solid to be sent to a lab for processing.

Tooth Extraction & Insertion of Implant

Your dentist will administer an anesthetic, so you should not feel pain—only vibration from the drill and possibly some pressure. In some cases, an incision will be made in the gum to expose the bone, and a few stitches will be applied. The new implant will now serve as an artificial root for your new tooth. In some cases, the dentist may choose to perform a bone graft to strengthen the jaw before sending you home to heal.

After the procedure, you will be able to drive home and follow a normal routine. Expect to eat only soft foods for about a week. Your dentist will tell you when to schedule a follow-up appointment.

Abutment & Permanent Crown

When your dentist has decided your jawbone has sufficiently healed and fused with the dental implant, he will place an abutment on top of the implant to connect to the crown. In some cases, the abutment can be placed at the same time as the implant. Ask your dentist to discuss all options with you in advance.

Finally, you’re ready to have the crown attached to the abutment. Your new tooth is now in place.
