At Stafford Dental Associates LLC, in Stafford Springs, CT, they’ll keep your teeth clean before the infection reaches the point where more advanced dental procedures are necessary. They’ll also answer any questions you may have about this condition. Take a look at a few key pieces of information below.

Dentist Explains What You Need To Know About Abscessed Teeth

Periodontal Abscess

Stafford-Springs-CT-DentistThere are two major types of abscesses—a periodontal abscess, and a periapical abscess.

A periodontal abscess involves an infection located in the space between the teeth and gums. If you haven’t properly cleaned your teeth, food can get stuck in that space, attracting bacteria. Sometimes the bacteria accumulates to such a point that it even starts to damage the nearby bone tissue.

Periapical Abscess

This type of abscess occurs when the dental pulp is infected. This type of condition usually requires a root canal or similar dental procedure to correct. If the decay reaches a particularly severe point, you might even lose the tooth.

While abscesses can cause pain, not all patients experience noticeable discomfort right away. That’s why you should be on the lookout for other symptoms of this condition, like bad breath, a constant bad taste in your mouth, sensitivity to extreme temperatures, and in many cases, a bump in the mouth that appears to be filled with fluid.

If you notice any of these symptoms, see your dentist right away. At Stafford Dental Associates LLC, treating patients in and around Stafford Springs, CT, for four decades and counting, they’ll take a close look at your teeth to determine the best course of action.
