Like humans, cats are vulnerable to a number of illnesses, and parasites like roundworms are some of the most troublesome. There are two varieties of roundworms which affect felines, both of which require care and active prevention to avoid serious health problems. Keep an eye out for the signs of infection, and consult with your veterinarian about how to keep your cats healthy.

Symptoms

Roundworms live in your cat’s digestive system and might migrate through other tissues to get there. Because of this, a cat who is infected with worms might experience:

  • Weight Loss: The roundworms essentially steal food your cat has eaten, making it difficult for them to maintain a healthy weight.

  • Dull Coat: Because of the depletion of nutrients, your cat will show this general sign of poor health.

  • Diarrhea: The digestive distress caused by worms might cause abnormal bowel movements and distress.

  • Coughing: One of the two types of roundworms which infects cats sometimes migrates through the lungs.

  • Worms in Vomit or Feces: This symptom is more common in infected kittens but makes the condition easy to identify.

Once these symptoms make an appearance, take your cat to a veterinarian. They will test to confirm the presence and type of worms and prescribe medication to address the infection.

Treatment

VeterinarianThere are several varieties of roundworm medications available, so your vet will prescribe the one most likely to help your cat with the minimum side effects. Because roundworm medications only affect adult worms, your cat will have to undergo multiple courses of treatment, usually at two-week intervals. This ensures any eggs or larvae are killed as they mature and don’t have the chance to produce eggs of their own. After deworming, your cat might also need to receive preventative medications.
