A toothache is a painful sensation in the mouth that’s typically a telltale sign a person has a cavity or an oral infection. Because toothaches can prevent someone from comfortably eating, drinking, and sleeping, it is essential to see a dentist as soon as any discomforts surface. In the meantime, however, you can reduce oral pains with a few at-home remedies.

How to Safely Stop a Toothache

1. Apply Clove Oil

When the artery, vein, or nerve inside a tooth becomes infected, a toothache often results. If you’re unable to see a dentist immediately, then treat the inflamed area with clove oil. This essential oil is incredibly effective for instant alleviation, as it contains a natural pain reliever known as eugenol. After depositing some of the clove oil onto a piece of tissue paper or cotton swab, softly press it onto the injured tooth. This method is especially beneficial for those with an exposed nerve, severed tissue, or severe tooth trauma.

2. Rinse Your Mouth With Salt

To perform this homeopathic quick fix, bring room temperature water to a boil, either in the microwave or on the stove. Next, fill a glass with the water and slowly stir in sea salt crystals or Himalayan salt. Continue stirring until most of the salt has dissolved. Gargle the mix four or five times a day for maximum relief.

3. Ice the Infected Area

While waiting to see a dentist, reduce oral swelling by keeping the inflammation at a low temperature. Wrapping a frozen bag of peas up in a towel, place the cold vegetables against the infected tooth. If you don’t have any bags of frozen foods, fill a plastic bag with water and ice instead. To prevent blood from flowing to your head and increasing the pain in your corrupted tooth, keep your body elevated by propping your head up on a pillow.
