While installing new cabinets is a great way to transform a space, it can also be a bit expensive. It used to be that painting over old cabinets was the only alternative to buying new ones, but now, you have other options, such as refinishing. This approach is an easier, more affordable way to get the gorgeous amenities you’re after. Here are a few of the options you have when taking on this type of project.

3 Cabinet Refinishing Methods

1. Glazed

After the cabinets have been painted or stained, a glaze base coat is applied to add more color. Next, a highlight glaze is used to add visual depth and interest by accenting the grooves and edges of the cabinets. This process is often combined with a cream paint to create a cottage-style aesthetic. Because this method of refinishing adds a bit of sheen to the surface, the final product is more polished than it is vintage.

2. Antique or Vintage

vintage cabinetsIf you prefer an antique or vintage style, the contractor will lightly distress the cabinets to create a worn appearance. In some cases, they may also use tools to reveal the wood grain on the edges. This cabinet refinishing approach can be used with or without paint, and it is effective if you desire amenities that look as though they were made with repurposed wood.

3. Burnished

Burnished cabinets also have a distressed aesthetic, although they tend to appear more traditional than glazed or antiqued amenities. The contractor will sand down the cabinets to create a worn-in look, and they will then apply a darkening stain. Next, they’ll apply a lighter stain, and once that has set, they’ll wipe it down by hand to accentuate the wood’s natural color. Most often, they will leave the corners and crevices a darker color. Highlights can also be randomly applied in a complementary color to give the wood a warm look. Because the process is completed by hand, each cabinet is unique.
