Many students begin studying for the SAT without a plan. As a result, they spend their time focusing on the wrong things. To help students successfully prepare for the SAT, Peach State Tutoring & Test Prep, serving Roswell, Johns Creek, Milton, Cumming, Duluth, Norcross, Suwanee, and Alpharetta, GA, provides the focused academic tutoring they need. Below, their specialists offer the following tips to start students off on the right track.

How to Study for the SAT

Reading

sat prep tipsIn the critical reading section of the SAT, students must answer sentence-completion questions to test their vocabulary. Before the test, they should have a working knowledge of college-level vocabulary. Reading is the best way to learn and understand new terms, but word games like crossword puzzles and Scrabble can help, too. Students should also develop a reading strategy and practice it before the test. These may include skimming the passages and then reading the questions or skipping straight to the questions then going back to read the passage, looking for the answers as you go.

Writing

The best way for students to improve their writing skills is to practice. The essay portion of the SAT lasts just 25 minutes. In that time, students must read a prompt and write a persuasive essay. Practicing with sample prompts and timing themselves while writing will help them prepare. The questions in the writing section test the students’ knowledge of grammar rules and sentence structure. Learning to identify grammatical errors and understanding why they’re wrong is key for this section.

Math

The SAT covers a lot of ground when it comes to math, but there are some concepts it does not include, like trigonometry and calculus. A good SAT prep tutor can tell a student which concepts should get the most focus during study time, like functions or systems of equations. Students should spend more time on the concepts they understand the least. It’s also important to review the answers when practicing math problems to fully understand why the solution they got was right or wrong.

Preparing for the SAT can be overwhelming, but with an experienced tutor from Peach State Tutoring & Test Prep, it doesn’t have to be. In addition to their SAT and ACT prep, they also offer their students a free evaluation test to determine which one they’ll score higher on.
