If your HVAC system is wearing out or breaking down, one of the first signs you’ll notice may be an unusual sound coming from the system. A hum or drone is normal, but if you hear anything else, something is wrong. Several common problems have their own distinctive sound, and being able to identify them can help you and your HVAC contractor save time on any repairs. Here are the three most common noises you’ll hear from your heating system or air conditioner and what to do about each.

Problematic Sounds HVAC Systems Make

1. Hissing

A hissing sound is a sign of air leaking through a small gap. The louder the hiss, the more forceful the leak. Check any seals, covers, and filters to make sure they’re correctly set in place so there are no gaps around the edges. If the hiss continues, you’ll likely need professional repairs for your ducts or other equipment.

2. Rattling

HVACA rattling sound in your system generally means there is a loose bit of debris inside that is being struck by the fans and other moving parts. If this is in an easily accessible place—like just inside the cover of an outdoor unit—you can often remove the object yourself to solve the problem. However, if the sound is coming from deeper in the system, you’ll need professional assistance.

3. Clanking

A clank is a louder and more intermittent sound than a rattle—and also indicates a more serious problem. Clanking is sometimes caused by loose parts inside the HVAC system, which can be dangerous. Turn the heater or air conditioner off right away to avoid further damage.
