Teeth whitening has become one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry treatments. With so many different products on the market, a lot of patients still have questions. Richard N. Leverett, DMD, the dentist at Elberta Dental in Alabama answers some of the most frequently asked questions he receives from patients.

What to Know About Teeth Whitening

1. Is Teeth Whitening Safe?

This cosmetic dentistry treatment is safe. While there is an abundance of over-the-counter teeth whitening products available, keep in mind that dentist-supervised whitening is the safest way to achieve a brighter smile.

2. Does It Cause Tooth Sensitivity?

teeth whiteningMany patients experience some sensitivity during the whitening process and for a few days after the treatment. It usually subsides within a few days.

3. Will It Affect My Tooth-Colored Fillings, Crowns, or Veneers?

Bleaching products do not affect the color of these restorations. If those restorations have become discolored, they’ll need to be replaced.

4. How Long Do the Results Last?

Teeth whitening is not a permanent cosmetic treatment. Your oral hygiene habits and diet determine how long the results last. With proper oral care, regular cleanings from the dentist, and a diet low in teeth-staining foods, like coffee, your whiter smile will last 18 months to two years.

5. How Much Will It Cost?

This procedure is not covered by dental insurance, so you must pay for teeth whitening out of pocket. The costs vary, though, depending on whether you choose an in-office treatment or a take-home kit provided by the dentist. Some practices offer special rates for new patients or financing options to make cosmetic procedures more affordable.

If you want a brighter, whiter smile, contact Elberta Dental at (251) 986-3500 to schedule a consultation.
