When it comes to nursing home abuse and neglect, the numbers are staggering. One study found that 44% of nursing home residents have been abused, and 95% have been neglected. Still, given these astonishing numbers, only 7% of complaints filed with nursing home administrators concern abuse or neglect. The low number of reports shows that we all need to be more aware of this issue, and we need to know some of the common signs of nursing home abuse and neglect so we can better protect our loved ones; below, a few of these signs are discussed in more detail.

Physical Wounds

The presence of physical wounds, especially repeated injuries, should be a red flag when it comes to identifying nursing home abuse. A nursing home resident typically does not lead an overly active life, and limiting their surroundings is one way to ensure proper care and avoid injury. But if injuries are occurring even in a setting with round-the-clock care, it may be time to consider that such wounds are not accidental at all, but inflicted by others.

Rapid Weight Loss

nursing home abuseLife in a long-term care facility can be stressful, so some weight fluctuation is to be expected among nursing home residents. But if there is a relatively brief period of rapid weight loss, it could signal something potentially deadly: malnutrition. Whether by accident or design, malnutrition is a type of neglect that can leave an elder seriously ill or worse. Most nursing homes log the amount of food each resident eats, and this might be a good starting point if you suspect malnutrition.

Behavioral Changes

Age and illness can make formerly docile adults suddenly become moody, angry, violent, or withdrawn. But these changes could also indicate the presence of nursing home abuse or neglect. If a once-stable elder is now dealing with out-of-control emotions or out-of-character responses to people or surroundings, they might be trying to tell you they are being mistreated or neglected. Investigate any behavioral changes sooner rather than later.
