When you decide to adopt a pet, there are a number of vaccines which should be administered to protect them against harmful diseases. These vaccines may vary in number and frequency based on your pet’s breed, medical history, and the recommendations of your veterinarian. To better understand this important animal care practice and what is involved, consult the informative guide below.

4 Important Vaccines Your Pet Needs

1. DHPP for Dogs

The DHPP vaccine is a four-in-one vaccination for dogs. It protects against canine distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, and parainfluenza. It should first be administered at eight weeks of age, then again at 12 weeks, and another at 16 weeks. Your veterinarian may also recommend boosters each year depending on your dog’s daily habits and risk of exposure.

2. FVRCP for Cats

The FVRCP is a combination vaccine for cats. This shot protects against feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia. It is administered at eight, 12, and 16 weeks, with yearly booster recommendations.

3. FELV for Cats

Another common vaccine for kittens is the feline leukemia virus shot. This vaccination is administered at 12 and 16 weeks, and boosters may be recommended for high-risk adult cats. Although it is not considered a core vaccination by many veterinarians, it is highly recommended for kittens because they are at the greatest risk of developing this disease.

4. Rabies

Both cats and dogs should receive a rabies vaccine at 16 weeks. Rabies is a fatal disease and can be highly contagious for both animals and humans, so it is especially important your cat or dog receives this shot. Your veterinarian may also recommend booster shots for this vaccine, particularly if the pet has been exposed to an affected animal.
