Do you smell the unsettling and unpleasant odor of raw sewage in or around your home? With diligent maintenance, most septic systems can last for years without issues. However, problems can still occur. A foul odor wafting from the tank of your home’s plumbing is a reliable indicator something is wrong. Here are the four primary causes of septic tank odors.

What’s Causing My Septic System Odors?

1. Sewage Backup

The septic tank contains three layers: solids drift to the bottom to form a sludge layer, liquids settle in the middle, and a scum layer forms at the top. When the sludge layer rises high enough, it clogs the system. Because the incoming waste has nowhere to go, it backwashes into your home, causing intense foul odors. Avoid flushing items like diapers, feminine hygiene products, or wipes down the drain, and use minimal toilet paper. Also, perform routine septic tank maintenance and have the tank pumped before it fills.

2. Drain Field Contamination

The drain or leach field is akin to a mini aquifer, treating and cleansing wastewater that drifts into it from the septic tank. The drain field isn’t designed to handle solids and, if sewage spills into it, it can destroy the soil and produce an extremely foul odor.

3. Burst Pipe

Burst pipes are especially prevalent during the winter. When standing water freezes, it expands, increasing pressure. If the pressure becomes too much for the pipeline to bear, it explodes, and solid waste may leak from the pipe and end up in your home plumbing system. The smell will get worse as it accumulates.

4. Loose Lid

If the smell is coming from the septic tank, it may indicate a loose lid. Septic tanks typically have concrete or plastic covers. When these loosen, odors can seep out. Fortunately, this issue is simple to fix. Call your septic company to have it reattached.
