With winter kicking into high gear, most outdoor pools are covered for protection. While fitting your pool with a cover and handling general maintenance with a trusted pool contractor is a great first step, it’s important to keep an eye on your backyard, especially after big snowstorms, so you can reduce the impact of snow and ice.

PoolsWhen dealing with ice and snow on your cover, try not to panic. Your cover is built to endure quite a bit of weight and should be fine if there’s less than a foot of snow on top of it. What you should really look out for is the excess water when ice and snow melt. That’s when a water pump or lowering the overall water level comes into play. Use a pump to reduce the amount of liquid on a full-coverage cover and lower the general water level with the help of a pool contractor when you have a safety cover installed.

If you want to get ahead of the issue, you can remove snow and ice with caution. To properly clean off your pool cover, avoid using a traditional snow shovel or any instruments with sharp sides that could penetrate the material. When snow is soft and powdery, use a broom to sweep debris off of the cover. A leaf blower could also do the trick when snow is light and fresh.

Most pool contractors will also recommend having a water pump handy as you sweep and the snow melts. If freezing is common in your region as well, consider air pillows, so sheets of ice have a harder time sticking. During this process, don’t forget to look up and see if tree branches are hanging over the area. Trim these back to prevent the likelihood of a frozen branch falling and ripping the cover.
