Now that temperatures have dropped, your landscaping duties will be on hold for the season. During this time of year, you should store your lawn equipment for safe keeping. Here are a few easy steps for winterizing your mower from Genesis Landscape, Contracting & Design, Charlotte, NC’s best source for hardscaping and landscape design

4 Step to Follow When Storing a Lawn Mower for Winter

Landscape Design1. Empty Gas Tank

When gas is left in your mower for months without being used, it can lead to rust and carburetor malfunctions. Before storing it away for winter, add fuel stabilizer and siphon any remaining gas into a clean can.

2. Disconnect Spark Plug

Once fuel has been removed, disconnect the spark plug. This way, there’s no risk of the device kicking into gear while you continue your maintenance plan.

3. Drain Oil & Clean Undercarriage

After you empty the fuel tank and disconnect the spark plug, turn the mower on its side to investigate the condition of the undercarriage. Use a wrench to unscrew and detach the blade for easier access. Prepare a pan and remove the oil cap so you can drain excess fluid. Next, wipe down the undercarriage so it’s free of mud and grass that could cause rust.

4. When in Doubt, Call a Professional

If you have problems with the winterization process, don’t hesitate to call your landscape design team. They can help you prepare any lawn equipment to weather the winter. While on-site, they can also provide recommendations for landscape design to ensure your plants make it through the colder months.
