To optimize their performance, athletes routinely spend hours each day training and pushing their bodies to the limit. Surprisingly, the body part which is most susceptible to the adverse effects of exercise is the skin. The dermatologists and providers at Asheboro Dermatology & Skin Surgery Center in West End, Asheboro and Thomasville areas in NC, note how athletes’ prolonged exposure to sweat, tight-fitting clothing, and direct contact with others increases their risk of developing acne, rashes, and other skin conditions. Below, they share some suggestions to mitigate these issues.

5 Skin Care Tips for Athletes

1. Shower After Training

Shower after each and every training session. Cleansing your skin with soap and warm water will help to remove the dirt, sweat, and other bacteria which linger on the skin after an intense workout. Showering will also minimize your risk of developing acne and other forms of skin irritation.

2. Wear Sunblock

Dermatologists often express the benefits of wearing sunblock each day, but this is especially important for athletes. Training outdoors in direct sunlight dramatically increases your risk of getting sunburned or developing skin cancer. Apply an SPF-45 or higher about 30 minutes before going outdoors, and every two hours thereafter. If you are swimming or sweating heavily, reapply with each time you dry off.

3. Switch Up Your Clothing

dermatologistWhile spandex and other tight-fitting clothing can help to make you more aerodynamic, they can also restrict the flow of oxygen to the skin. This increases your risk of acne, irritation, and skin chafing. If possible, wear loose-fitting clothes during your workouts, or invest in moisture-wicking outerwear, which helps to reduce irritation.

4. Invest in Quality Moisturizers

It can be hard to focus on your performance while nursing chafed thighs or an ankle blister. Fortunately, these conditions can be prevented by moisturizing each day. Invest in a high-quality lotion, and perform hydrating skin treatments at least once a week.

5. Clean & Disinfect Cuts, Scrapes, & Bruises

If you participate in a contact sport, there is a good chance you will sustain an injury every now and then. Most small cuts and scrapes won’t put you out of the game, but they should still be tended to immediately. Clean the wound with disinfectant, and apply Band-Aids® or dressings as needed. This will allow the skin to heal properly and prevent any infections.
