Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. It’s a type of dementia characterized by the loss of memory as well as the loss of cognitive abilities that facilitate patients’ capacity to function on a day-to-day basis. Although most people with Alzheimer’s disease are 65 or older, five percent of people with the disease are under 65.

Signs of Alzheimer’s

Short-term memory loss is one of the first and most noticeable signs of the disease. Patients often ask for the same information repeatedly, and struggle to remember dates. They can also have trouble judging the passage of time and spatial relations.

alzheimersWhile everyone occasionally misplaces things, a person with Alzheimer’s disease may put objects in unusual places and be unable to find them again. Shifts in personality or mood, such as anxiety, depression and fear, can also be an early indicator of the disease.

Treatment Options

There is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s, although there are treatments and preventative measures one can take to slow the progress of the disease. Treatment options include medications that can temporarily lessen the confusion that comes with disease, and non-drug treatments that focus on addressing the needs of the Alzheimer’s patient. This includes ensuring the patient has a safe living environment, gets plenty of sleep, and has all personal health and comfort needs met.

If you suspect a loved one is experiencing Alzheimer’s symptoms, talk to your doctor. You can also find support as a caregiver from the Alzheimer’s Association.
