Safety on the road is all about being alert and prepared — especially when unexpected problems strike. Part of any driver’s emergency readiness kit includes a spare tire. If you get a flat, you will have what you need to perform a quick tire change and get on your way. But how long does a spare last, and how many miles can you safely drive one?

towingA compact or space-saver tire, also known as a donut, is a rudimentary solution. These usually have less tread, are mounted on a basic steel rim, and are undersized in terms of both height and width. A donut can generally be used for 70 miles at a maximum speed of 50 miles per hour before requiring a tire change. Each model will detail its terms of use on its sidewall or rim — always check these instructions to be sure.

A full-size spare tire usually matches the specifications of the rest of the tires on your car. Most people buy tires in sets of five for this exact reason. Unlike a donut, a full-size spare can be used under normal circumstances for an indefinite amount of time; no additional tire change is required. Double-check the specifications on the tire to make sure, however. The downside to a full-size spare is it needs extra storage space, which is why some people opt for a donut.
