For people who like to have a general idea of their tax situation before the end of the year, tax planning is a great way to take some of the mystery out.  For business owners, tax planning is frequently the trigger whether to do some billing or delay, make a purchase this year or wait until next year, etc.  

For 2017, it is really important that individuals who may owe state taxes and itemize their returns put serious thought into prepaying their state taxes, possibly paying an additional mortgage payment, and some similar choices because those deductions may not be available next year!
