Although the season for quick dips in the hot tub is gone, you can’t forget the many important tasks required to maintain this amenity over the winter. Proper maintenance during the colder months will prevent costly service calls to a pool contractor and ensure a summer-ready hot tub once the warm weather returns. Here, the local pool contractors at The Pool Guys in Troy, MO, share a few tips for maintaining your hot tub through the winter.

Top 5 Tips for Winterizing Your Hot Tub

1. Thoroughly Clean the Hot Tub

Many pool manufacturers make a spa flush cleaner, which you can use to clean your hot tub before it goes into hibernation. Pour the cleaner into the tub, then completely drain the system. This will minimize the risk of bacteria and mold growth, which can be harmful to your health if allowed to mix with the water in the tub. Also, use a wet-dry vacuum or a submersible pump to flush the system and remove remaining debris.

2. Remove & Clean Filters

Pool contractorCompletely remove filters that are more than a year old. If your filter is less than one year old, rinse it with a water hose to loosen large particles. Allow the filter to air dry, then store it inside in a dry location.

3. Secure From Winter Elements

If you aren’t planning to use your spa during the winter, replace all cabinet panels and secure the latches. Place a protective cover over the hot tub and secure it with buckles. If your town is prone to high winds, add extra straps over the lid to prevent it from blowing away.

4. Insulate & Regulate Temperature

If you plan to use your hot tub during the winter, it’s imperative the tub retains as much heat as possible. Use a thermal blanket to cover the surface of the water. Doing so reduces evaporation and preserves the heat of the water. Also, try to maintain a consistent temperature in the tub. Increasing or decreasing the temperature too drastically puts stress on the pump and strains its mechanical parts.

5. Use an Antifreeze Solution

If you are draining your pool for the season, make an effort to keep the pumps, valves, and pipes from freezing. Once you drain the system, allow it to air dry, or use a wet-dry vac to remove remaining water. Once everything is moisture-free, remove one of the jets and pour in a half gallon of antifreeze.

Proper hot tub maintenance during the winter months will lower energy consumption, protect your investment, and ensure a functioning spa when its time for a dip.
