Most people use surge protectors in their homes, but how many of us actually know exactly what they do? After all, surge protectors are as ubiquitous as they are for a reason: They serve a critical purpose for home electronics. Without them, precious technological devices, including laptops, smartphones, tablets, and gaming consoles would be far more vulnerable.

Here, M.R. Stoner Electric, an electrical contractor based in Sanford, NC, explains what surge protectors do:

  • electrical contractorsPower Spike Protection: A power spike is a sudden, brief increase in the voltage of the electrical current running through an outlet. It can be caused by lightning, power outages, or problems with the electrical grid. These voltage increases can damage any electronic items plugged into outlets experiencing spikes. Surge protectors mitigate the potential damage of power spikes by diverting the excess electricity into the surge protector.
  • Power Surge Protection: A power surge is simply a long-lasting power spike. They could last for a few seconds or longer. Because of this, they are even more dangerous than spikes, and the surge in voltage can fry computers, tablets, phones, and just about any other pricey device. Surge protectors are even more important for protecting your electronics.
  • The MOV: Surge protectors absorb excess voltage through what's called a metal oxide varistor (MOV). The MOV uses its grounding wire for variable electrical resistance—a fancy term for modulating the voltage that passes through it.
