With winter arriving, you may be looking to store your motorcycle, Jet Ski®, or ATV, as it will be too cold to ride them. Throwing these items straight into self-storage without proper preparation could result in problems when you’re ready to take them out next spring. Below are a few tips for preparing your vehicle for self-storage.

Preparing for Self-Storage

Fill Up the Gas Tank

If your gas tank is left empty for a long period, condensation can form which, when combined with the existing gas, can lead to plant-like growths clogging your carburetor. Fill it up so the gas hits the bottom of the filler neck. You can also use a fuel stabilizer to prevent moisture from accumulating.

Check Your Oil

Fresh, uncontaminated oil does a better job of protecting your parts and pipes when flowing through than used oil. While you’re at it, top off your brake, clutch, and transmission fluid levels to prevent moisture.

Remove the Battery

Putting your vehicle in self-storage often means placing it in a cold environment during winter. An automotive battery loses 60 percent of its strength at 0 degrees Fahrenheit and 35 percent of its power at 32 degrees. To increase the life span of your battery, remove it while your vehicle is in storage and keep it in a climate close to 59 degrees.

Check Tire Pressure

When the temperature drops, so does your tire pressure. In warmer weather, the rubber on your tire seals to the rim, keeping the air in. When it gets cold, the rubber separates, allowing the air out. Before putting your vehicle into storage, raise your tire pressure to the maximum safe level to keep your tire rubber from freezing. Pump your tires during the winter to ensure they’re full. Additionally, elevate your vehicle onto wood blocks, a crate, or a sturdy bike rack to keep it off the cold floor.

The cold weather of winter may convince you to store your motorcycle, Jet Ski, or ATV until the warmth returns. If so, these tips will ensure that your vehicle is safe and ready to ride when spring arrives.
