What Is a Civil Surgeon?, Queens, New York

Passing a medical examination is an important step in the process of becoming a permanent resident, but only certain health care providers are registered to perform such exams. A civil surgeon is a medical doctor whom the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) has selected to perform exams on aliens who want to change their status.

How Do You Become a Civil Surgeon?

Medical doctors who wish to conduct green card physicals must apply to the USCIS unless they are already considered an eligible physician under the blanket civil surgeon designation guidelines. Once a doctor has been approved, they must consistently review instruction materials from the USCIS in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Civil surgeons must also make it a point to stay up-to-date on any changing guidelines and attend seminars as needed.

What Is the Role of a Civil Surgeon?

civil surgeonA civil surgeon must administer immigration medical exams according to the Technical Instructions for the Medical Examinations of Aliens in the United States. It is each doctor’s responsibility to obtain these documents from the CDC and comply with every one of the requirements listed. For example, the practitioners must be well versed in screening for conditions like gonorrhea, syphilis, and tuberculosis. They must also administer age-appropriate vaccinations as needed. Other components of the exam might include blood work and x-rays.

A civil surgeon is responsible for facilitating the transition from alien to permanent resident. This is an important job, and it is not one that any medical doctor should take lightly. For this reason, it is wise to turn to a provider who has extensive experience conducting these exams and is familiar with the application process.
