When you’re moving to a new home, updating your address with every company and agency that needs to know may not be the first thing on your mind. You don’t want to deal with the fallout of missing a bill or losing a service, however. There’s a long list to get through, but don’t let the task discourage you. You’ll appreciate how smooth the transition is afterward.

Who to Notify About Address Changes When Moving

1. Postal Services

Visit your local post office to have a change of address. Set up a forwarding service to make sure any mail on its way gets to your new home.

2. Work & School

Even if you’re leaving your job and already gave your notice, you still need to give them your new address for tax documents and insurance purposes. If you have children, let the school know about the move so they can transfer academic records to the new school.

3. Insurance Companies

Car, health, life, and homeowners insurance agencies should have your current address in their records. Call to update your information.

4. Utilities

Call gas, electric, water, internet, and cable providers ahead of time to cancel services on moving day. Make sure the utility services at your new home are set up to start on the day of your arrival.

5. Department of Motor Vehicles

If you’re moving across state lines, you’re going to have to update your driver’s license, registration, and insurance. Visit the DMV within a month after you move.

6. The IRS

Print, fill out, and mail in the IRS’ movingChange of Address form either before or soon after you move. This is important for tax returns and other documents. Keep in mind that it can take up to six weeks for the change to process.

7. Government Agencies

Keep government programs such as Medicaid, Social Security, and Medicare up to date on your location. Update your voter registration address or re-register if you’re in a new state.

8. Medical Professionals

Have your doctor, dentist, and any other health service you use transfer your prescriptions, information, and medical records.

9. Financial Institutions

Inform your bank about the change in address to make sure no transactions get blocked in your new location. Stockbrokers, retirement funds, credit card companies, and all other financial dealings should be notified as well.
