Since milk allergies are incredibly common, most parents turn to readily available substitutes like soy milk. Unfortunately, many alternatives contain added sugar, contributing to problems like early childhood tooth decay. Here are three dental care friendly milk substitutes for kids with dairy allergies, so that you can protect their smile while you nourish their bodies.

Dental Care Approved Dairy-Free Milk Substitutes

Lactose-Free Cows Milk

If you suspect that your child has a milk allergy, ask your child’s doctor if they are allergic to the proteins in the milk or the lactose, which is a naturally occurring sugar. If they are allergic to lactose, consider switching to lactose-free cows milk. In addition to being easy to find, lactose-free milk tastes more like regular milk, making the transition easier for picky kids.

Unsweetened Almond Milk

However, since many versions contain added sugar, look for options that are labeled as “unsweetened,” and check the nutritional labels carefully. Additionally, since many children have more than one allergy, make sure your little one doesn’t have a tree nut allergy before you substitute with almond milk.

Rice Milk

Derived from rice and other grains, rice milk is the most hypoallergenic type of milk substitute. Unfortunately, rice milk can also be low in protein and Vitamin D, so make sure you purchase a version that has been fortified with these essential minerals. Also, since rice milk tends to be higher in carbohydrates than other alternatives, take preventive dental care seriously, and schedule regular oral exams for your little one.
