If your tooth was badly injured or you’re suffering from a severe toothache, you may need to undergo an extraction. A dentist likewise may need to pull wisdom teeth or any that otherwise crowd the mouth. By removing the impacted tooth, the dentist can prevent infections and further decay. If you believe you’re in need of a tooth extraction procedure and are unsure what to expect, refer to the following guide.

Dentists with special training can perform tooth extractions. Before removing the tooth, they will numb the targeted area with an anesthetic injection. If you are having several teeth removed, general anesthetic may be necessary. Either method will ensure you do not feel any pain during the procedure.

dentistAfter the anesthetic takes effect, the dentist will cut away at the afflicted gum and bone tissue. Then, they will use a forceps tool to grip the tooth and gently loosen it from the ligaments and jaw bone. If the tooth is difficult to remove, it may need to come out in several pieces. However, most dislodge in one piece fairly easily.

Next, the dentist will fill the empty socket with a gauze pad to halt the bleeding. In some cases, a few self-dissolving stitches may be necessary to close the gum edges. To prevent pain and infection while your mouth heals, painkillers and antibiotics may be prescribed. You will need to consume soft foods for about 24 hours following the procedure.
