Dental crowns once required multiple appointments at the dentist’s office to complete. Used to repair a cracked tooth or a compromised filling, crowns are placed over the tooth to cover and protect it. Now, CEREC® technology has enabled dental practices to streamline the process, delivering added convenience for patients. Here to explain what the procedure entails is Gleason Dental Clinic in Beatrice, NE.

Traditionally, patients who need a dental crown would have to visit the dentist for a preliminary appointment to have an impression taken. The impression would then be sent to a lab, where a technician would develop a custom crown designed to fit the patient’s tooth. In the meantime, a patient would wear a temporary crown until the permanent one could be affixed days later.

crownsThe CEREC process eliminates the need for two separate appointments. Instead of using messy molds to create an impression, your dentist will capture a digital image of your tooth. Then, the CEREC software will craft a custom crown based on the image. The system’s milling machine will create a crown to fit perfectly with your tooth, and it will even be created in the same color for the most natural possible appearance. The process takes roughly 20 minutes, versus the days required for the traditional method.

Next, your dentist will examine the crown and make sure it fits flawlessly. Once the crown is perfected, they will then bond it to the tooth using a special dental cement. The dentist will remove any excess cement and polish the crown, and you’ll have everything accomplished in one hassle-free appointment.
