If you are among the 178 million Americans with missing teeth, you might be wondering about your replacement options. Dental implants and partial dentures, or “partials,” are two of the most common restorative features dentist use. However, both have benefits and drawbacks so review the information below to help determine which one is right for you.

Dental Implants

dental implantsDental implants are artificial teeth affixed to titanium posts that are surgically implanted directly into the patient’s jawbone. Implants look, feel, and function just like natural teeth, and you even care for them by brushing and flossing along with the rest of your teeth. They are a permanent tooth replacement solution, although the crown of the implant may need to be replaced after 10 to 15 years from normal wear and tear.

Dental implants are the most comfortable option, and they help reduce the risk of bone loss. While they are also the most expensive option, they are permanent and long-lasting. The implantation procedure is a multi-step process that can take a few months, from implanting the posts to installing the crowns.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are a removable plastic base with artificial teeth attached. They must be removed to be properly cleaned each night. Partials are a cost-effective solution; however, they can break and will need to be replaced about every five years.

Similar to implants, partial dentures are designed to look like natural teeth, but because they are not permanently fixed in the mouth, some people experience slippage when eating certain foods. They also don’t protect against bone loss. The process is quicker than implants and some dentists can provide partial dentures the same day.
