When your heating and cooling system gives you trouble, a repair service isn’t too far behind. However, before you call in an expert, there are a few quick steps you can perform to identify and potentially remedy the problem. Here’s how you can troubleshoot the most common heating and cooling problems.

Identifying 3 HVAC Problems

Uneven Interior Temperatures

Unbalanced airflow in the heating and cooling system causes some areas of the home to become warmer or colder than others. The solution is to rebalance your air ducts by increasing or reducing airflow to each area of the house as necessary. Locate the damper handles on the HVAC ducts. Open and close the damper handles to control the flow of air through the ducts and balance out the airflow.

Inaccurate Thermostat

Heating and CoolingAre you met with disappointing temperature changes when you crank the heat? If you can’t get your thermostat and temperature on the same page, it is usually a calibration issue. Older mercury or bi-metal thermostats lose calibration easily. Consider investing in a digital thermostat, as they are accurate and rarely suffer from calibration issues.

Indoor Fan Runs Continuously

A fan that continues to run when you turn the thermostat to the “off” position has two potential causes. First, the culprit could be a bad thermostat, in which case the fix is to replace it. The other issue could be a fan relay that is stuck closed. Call a licensed heating and cooling contractor to look things over if replacing the thermostat doesn’t resolve the issue.
