With autumn in full force, you’re probably already gearing up for colder weather. If you have a furnace, you probably want to turn it on as soon as possible to get your home at a comfortable temperature; however, there are a few things you need to do beforehand. The building contractors at Signature Construction, located in Trinity, NC, are here to give you a few tips on how to safely and successfully get your furnace started up this winter.

Here are the steps you should take according to the experts before turning it on:

  • Replace Air Filters: After a season of not using your furnace, there is bound to be some buildup of dust, pet fur, and other particles caught in the filter. Before turning on your furnace, building contractors recommend that you clean or replace the filter to ensure that the air flowing through your home is clean.

  • Check the Vents: Most furnaces have either a direct vent located on an outside wall or one that goes through the chimney. Since they are both connected to the outside of your home, it is possible that they could be blocked by bird nests, leaves, or other debris. Making sure that these areas are unobstructed is crucial to the functionality of your furnace and avoiding toxic gas leaks. If you notice any blockages, get them cleared right away.

  • Inspect for Carbon Monoxide: If your furnace is fueled by oil or gas, you’ll need to make sure that it isn’t emitting any toxic fumes into your home. During operation, carbon monoxide gas should be funneled out of your home through the vent. If you have previously noticed any vent blockages, you should thoroughly inspect your home for any lingering carbon monoxide. After the inspection, install carbon monoxide detectors if you haven’t done so already.
