You can prevent most tooth decay by brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, and visiting your dentist twice a year for a cleaning and an exam. But even the most dedicated oral hygiene buff can be vulnerable to tooth decay. It’s important to know the signs of decay, so you can have it treated before it gets worse.

5 Signs of Tooth Decay

1. Sensitivity

dentistTooth sensitivity can mean that some enamel has worn off your teeth. You may be sensitive to hot or cold beverages, or sweet foods like chocolate or candy. Sensitivity can also result from brushing too hard, so switch to a soft-bristled toothbrush, and use a lighter touch when brushing to see if the problem clears up after a few days.

2. Pain While Chewing

If you have tooth pain when you eat, especially crunchy, chewy, or sticky foods, you may have decay in your tooth. At the early stages, tooth decay is not painful. If you have a toothache, you should have it checked out by your dentist as soon as possible to prevent it from worsening.

3. Spots on Your Teeth

Sometimes the signs of tooth decay are visible. This looks like gray, brown, or black spots on the teeth. If you see spots that do not come off with brushing, it’s time to visit the dentist.

4. Gum Swelling

Tooth decay can lead to infection, which can cause red, swollen, or bleeding gums near the affected tooth. Make sure you add flossing to your dental hygiene routine to keep your gums healthy.

5. Bad Breath

Bacteria causes tooth decay and left unchecked, it also causes bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth that won’t go away with brushing. If you’re embarrassed by bad breath that won’t go away, ask your dentist to check for tooth decay.

If you experience any of these symptoms, don’t be afraid to speak with your dentist. It’s best to catch tooth decay early because fillings are easier and cheaper than replacing a tooth that’s infected beyond repair. Don’t wait another day to care for your oral health.
