A plow is one of the most important pieces of snow removal equipment you can own. With a high-quality snowplow, you can clear roads, help vehicles and passengers reach their destinations, and assist business owners in keeping their shops open on the snowiest of days. While your plow accomplishes quite a bit during the snowy season, it can also take a beating. Daily use and wear and tear can damage the blades, leaving them weak or brittle.

Fortunately, companies such as BOSS® have developed accessories and attachments to protect your blades. Two of their most popular options include the cutting-edge and base-angle attachments. To learn more about these snowplow accessories and determine which is the best choice for you, continue reading below.

Cutting Edge Vs. Base Angle: Which Snowplow Attachment Do You Need?

Cutting Edge

The cutting edge is an attachment which is placed over the edge of the plow blade. When fastened securely, the cutting edge protects your blade from damage as it scrapes the ground to pick up snow. Over time, the attachment will wear down and can be replaced, but your blade will remain as sharp and strong as ever.

Base Angle

snowplowA base angle is an accessory for trip-edge snowplows. Attached to the back of the blade, the base angle is an arm-and-spring mechanism which helps to stop unseen objects in the road. Without a base-angle attachment, your plow may hit the curb or a fire hydrant and sustain substantial damage. However, with this attachment in place, the blade will jump backward when it encounters an object before returning to place, creating a bouncing effect which prevents impact.

Which Do You Need?

If your plow is relatively new, you may only need the base-angle attachment. However, as your plow sustains more wear and tear over time, you may need a cutting edge to provide the blade with additional protection. Fortunately, the cutting edge can be fitted directly over the base angle, allowing you to benefit from both attachments at once.
