Whether it's a spacious garden or a small front lawn, many of us rely on a sprinkler system instead of watering it by hand. Despite its ubiquity, most of us are unaware of its individual components. Like most things, the more you understand, the better — especially if you need repairs. Any level of familiarity you have will assist in describing the situation to a professional.

5 Sprinkler System Components to Understand

1. Controller

When you need to adjust how much different areas of your garden, lawn, or landscaping need to be watered, you’re using the controller. These devices also allow you to program the time and duration of the watering.

2. Backflow Preventer

If you’re getting municipal water, a backflow preventer ensures any contaminated water won’t accidentally flow back in the opposite direction towards the city’s supply.

3. Sprinkler Head

As you may have guessed, the spray width and angle of the first has just one setting and can only cover a particular area while latter automatically adjusts its direction to cover a wider area.

4. Main & Zone Lines

Any line in a sprinkler system is simply piping that delivers water to the sprinkler heads. The main line connects directly to the water source while zone lines are limited to different areas.

5. Shutoff Valve

In the event there’s a problem with any of the lines or connections, the shutoff valve allows you to turn off the flow of water. This helps prevent flooding in any particular area.
