Hawaii is a beautiful place, full of lush foliage, stunning landscapes, and breathtaking surf. Part of what makes the island so striking is all the different species of plants that thrive there. Here, Hui Ku Maoli Ola Native Hawaiian Plant Specialists, a nursery based in Kaneohe, shares a few of the most interesting species.

3 Intriguing Hawaiian Plants

1. Plumeria

The pink, yellow, and white plumeria is one of Hawaii's most iconic flowers. Ironically, they're actually found all over the globe, and aren't even native to Hawaii. Introduced on the island in the 19th century, they quickly thrived in the warm climate. Today, the plumeria is often associated with sailors: during WWII, it was customary for sailors to toss a plumeria petal into the water on their way out to sea.

nursery2. Bird of Paradise

There's no mistaking this plant, whose flowers have a striking resemblance to a sharp-beaked bird in flight. Another non-native species, the bird of paradise originally comes from South Africa, but has found a second home in Hawaii, where residents adore its vibrant colors and unusual shape.

3. Naupaka

Naupaka are native to Hawaii and renowned for their wonderful fragrance. They also stand out from other flowers due to their peculiar shape; even in full bloom, the white petals only circle half the stem, giving the appearance of only half a flower.

Hui Ku Maoli Ola Native Hawaiian Plant Specialists has been providing local residents and businesses with beautiful plants and flowers for 25 years. The plant nursery’s selection includes over 100 native Hawaiian plants and additional Polynesian species introduced to the island centuries ago. Their team can handle projects of all sizes, from small gardens and home landscaping services to complete restoration endeavors. Visit the nursery's website to browse a list of their plant varieties, or call them directly at (808) 235-6165.
