Locals and tourists agree; Hawaii really is paradise on earth. If you’re lucky enough to have the opportunity to move to one of the beautiful Hawaiian Islands, however, it’s not always as easy as packing your bags and jetting off into the sunset. Before moving from the mainland, there are a few key steps you may need to take to prepare.

3 Steps for Moving to Hawaii

1. Register Your Car

If you plan to transport your car from the mainland, you will need to find a reputable marine moving company. Once you arrive, you will need to have your vehicle inspected and registered. Then, you need to transfer your out-of-state driver’s license and purchase Hawaiian car insurance.

2. Re-register to Vote

If you want to vote in your new state, you need to re-register. The government sometimes exempts active military members who are stationed in Hawaii from re-registration.

3. Prepare Your Pet

Hawaii has strict pet movingimportation laws that cannot be overlooked. If you have any pets, always check the Hawaii Department of Agriculture website for any updates to laws. Before you arrive to the island, your pet must have undergone two rabies shots at least 30 days apart. The last shot must be completed at least 90 days prior to your arrival. You will also need copies of all vaccine documentation, blood test results, and original health certificates.

You also need to have your veterinarian implant a microchip into your pet before undergoing a rabies blood test. Always make sure the microchip functions properly. If your pets cannot be identified via microchip upon arrival, Hawaii will place them under a 120-day quarantine. Due to the state’s restrictions involving pet importation, animals must be at least 10 months of age before they can meet all necessary requirements.
