New sod can transform your yard from a muddy, brown mess to a green oasis. After installation, it requires a bit of extra care, but it will all be worth it when your family can enjoy playing in the grass. Below, Buzz Landscaping in Conway, AR, shares three tips to help you care for your sod those first few weeks so the installation will be successful.

Tend to Your New Sod with These 3 Tips

1. Wait to Fertilize

New sod is typically fertilized before it is harvested. This means you don’t need to start a fertilizing schedule until one or two months after it is installed. Follow the instructions provided by your sod growers about when it is time to fertilize. They should explain how much nitrogen, phosphorous, and other nutrients make the perfect mix for your lawn species and size.

2. Skip Mowing

sodSod does not require mowing until it starts to root. This can begin around 10 days after install. However, it’s important to let the grass grow a few inches before you mow it for the first time as this allows it to fully root. Then it can withstand being mowed and won’t move out of place.

3. Prevent Traffic

Try to minimize foot traffic on the new pieces for at least the first week and a half. If you have pets or young children, it can be a challenge to protect your new sod, but you can create a temporary fence to people and animals off the grass. If you normally let your pets roam free in your yard, consider using a leash for a few weeks to keep them away from your fresh lawn.
