Using a polyethylene tank for your water needs is an excellent method for those who live in more remote, rural areas. These vessels, however, can become damaged, causing wasteful leaks. Depending on the severity of the crack in question, repairing a water tank is a cost-effective way to restore its function in lieu of a full replacement.

How to Repair a Water Tank

1.  Sand, Clean, & Drain the Tank

The dirtier the surface of a water tank is, the less effective an adhesive will be. Because of this, the first step in the repair process is to thoroughly clean the exterior of the vessel with soap and water. Once the tank is clean, drain its contents and sand down the damaged area so it’s smooth.

2. Solder or Prepare the Crack

waterIf damage to the tank is fairly minimal, you should be able to solder the crack shut easily. Prep the soldering iron and touch it to the top of the crack. Slowly move the iron down the length of it, allowing the melted plastic on both sides to merge.

If the damaged area is larger and can’t be soldered, you’ll have to prep it for the filler material in the next step. Drill a small hole at the top and bottom of the crack to prevent it from expanding. Then, use a heat gun to heat the area evenly. Once this is complete, use a drill to make a V-groove along the crack.

3. Apply Filler Material

Hardware stores should have the repair materials needed to patch up larger cracks in water tanks. Place the polyethylene strip on the damaged area, applying heat as it settles into place. Keep making passes with the heat gun to ensure the strip is fully attached. Then, use a utility knife to remove any excess and a putty knife to smooth out the area.

4. Test the Tank

Once the tank is completely dry, refill it while examining the previously damaged area for leaks. If there are none, the repair was a success! If you do notice leaks, however, you should apply more filler material.
