If you’re considering installing hardwood floors in your home, there are many factors to take into consideration. While most of your thoughts will likely turn to the aesthetics of your new floor, it’s also important to consider your current flooring. Depending on what type you have, you may be able to simply lay the hardwood on top. Thayer Decorating Center of Oregon County, MO, discusses three common subfloors hardwood can be laid over.

3 Surfaces You Can Lay Hardwood Floors Over

1. Concrete

Most homes have concrete underneath any flooring, so laying hardwood over this surface is rather easy. Hardwood can be installed over above-ground, below-ground, or suspended concrete, so long as it’s 1½ inches thick and structurally sound. While all above-ground and below-ground concrete will meet the necessary requirements, you may need to test any suspended concrete. Most is structurally sound, but if it’s lightweight, you need to test its stability by using a nail to scratch the surface. If the concrete crumbles and turns into powder, it’s not strong enough to lay the hardwood over.

2. Tile

hardwood floorsMany people wonder whether they can place hardwood floors over their existing tile ones. You can, but the floor must be completely level, which means there are certain aspects you will have to look out for. Many tiles have grout lines that are used for texture and will need to be filled in, as moisture could pool inside the cracks, creating problems for the new hardwood floors. While hardwood can be installed on all grades of flooring, you’ll want to be careful about any areas with high moisture content, such as basements, bathrooms, laundry rooms, or kitchens.

3. Wood

If you’re looking to install hardwood over your existing wood floor, you can do so with little trouble, but there is some preparation that must take place first. Any nails or screws should be countersunk, enlarging the rim of the hole made by the nail or screw, which will keep the existing wood grains from being torn apart. Make sure there are no weak spots in the concrete below; listening for squeaks and looking for areas that feel spongy or hollow will ensure the surface is structurally sound. As with any other surface, the subfloor needs to be flat and even, with a low moisture content.

With the proper preparation, you can lay hardwood floors over most surfaces. If you’re looking for experts to ensure your new flooring installation looks perfect, Thayer Decorating Center can help.
