When temperatures begin to drop, seeing the low-pressure light on your dashboard is a common occurrence. Winter can affect pressure in both brand-new and used tires because cold weather increases the air density inside. That isn’t the only effect the chilly weather can have on your wheels, though.

How Winter Weather Affects New & Used Tires

PSI

used tiresFor every 10 degrees the temperature drops, tire pressure also goes down by one psi, or pounds per square inch. When psi keeps going down, you will need to add air to tires to bring the levels back up to standard and ensure safe driving. Proper pressure prevents flat tires and blowouts while also increasing gas mileage.

Air Hose Moisture

You should always keep the caps on valve stems, but this is even more crucial in the winter. If you leave off the caps, moisture will get into the stem. This can freeze inside, making it impossible to refill your tires with air when necessary.

Rough Surfaces

Tires are also affected by salt used on roads during inclement weather, as it’s abrasive on rubber. In addition, snowplows cause debris from roadsides to mingle and compact on driving surfaces, leading to rougher terrain for your tires to traverse.

Rubber Integrity

Cold temperatures can cause rubber to become brittle and cracked, especially in older or heavily used tires. Once the material is compromised, it may pull away from rims or become more prone to blowouts.

Potholes

Snow and ice can wreak havoc on road surfaces, causing dents, cracks, and holes that make driving precarious. Potholes spell trouble for tires, especially if the road damage is extensive or you drive over them too quickly. This will wear out and damage tires, leading to potential blowouts and flats.
