Winters in Ohio can be harsh for humans, and the same can be said for their canine companions. Although dogs spend less time running and playing outside during winter, exposure to cold conditions can still make them sick. To ensure pets remain healthy, the animal care specialists at TLC Pet Care Centers, with locations on the West and East Side of Cincinnati, recommend dog owners adjust the way they care for their furry friends during the winter months.

Below, the staff at Cincinnati’s leading animal care facility shares three tips to keep dogs happy and healthy during winter:

  • animal careKeep Feet Protected: Snow removal salt contains calcium chloride, magnesium, and other chemicals that irritate dogs’ paws. The deposits can also stick to paw pads, increasing the risk of the animal ingesting the chemicals when they lick their feet. Swallowing the toxins could be life-threatening, causing anything from digestive problems to severe nerve damage. To keep your dog out of harm’s way, place boots on their paws before they spend time outside.
  • Add Insulation to Outdoor Spaces: Even during winter, dogs still need exercise. If they spend more than a few minutes in chilly weather, make sure the doghouse is well insulated. If the structure is large, consider replacing it with a smaller version. The smaller structure will help trap the animal’s body heat. Just make sure it’s big enough for the dog to comfortably sit, stand, and turn around.
  • Add More Calories to the Diet: Although you should strive to manage your dog’s weight, they can benefit from a few extra pounds during winter. Give your dog more food once winter arrives, as the extra calories will help produce more body heat.
