One of the most inconvenient damages a storm can cause is a power outage. These will be widespread in the wake of a large meteorological event, but power could also be cut by something as small as a downed tree in your neighborhood. Sometimes, it can take a while for an electric company to come out and amend the situation. In other cases, you may need to call an electrician.

electricianIt all depends on the source of the outage, and in some scenarios, your electric company won’t be able to fix the power outage at all. That’s because the company hasn’t actually had an outage—only your home has been affected. Most of the time, a single power outage in a larger neighborhood points to a damaged residential service mast.

A residential service mast consists of the electrical wires and conduit that run up the side of your house from an electrical meter and connect your home to the local power grid. This mast is attached to your home and is susceptible to damage during a storm if hit by a tree branch or other debris. If the component is bent, it could knock out your home’s access to electricity.

If this is the source of your outage, your electric provider will not repair it, as it is not part of the power lines. Since the internal damage can be difficult for the untrained eye to identify, you will need to call a licensed residential electrician to fix it. They can locate the issue involving your electrical mast and perform the necessary repairs to restore power to your home. In many cases, this means replacing some of the wires inside the component.
