The roof is one of your home or business’ main protectors. When it gets damaged after a strong storm, the rest of the building becomes vulnerable as well. This is why you should inspect the condition of the roof and shingles after every major hail or wind storm. Below are some signs to look out for.

Types of Shingle Damage

Granule Loss

It is commonly misbelieved that granule loss on asphalt shingles is only a cosmetic problem. However, when this protective coating starts to wither away, the lifespan of the shingles becomes a lot shorter—granules are responsible for protecting the asphalt from UV rays, heat, and the elements. Although shingles are made to withstand harsh weather, incredibly strong storms will cause the granules to lose their adhesiveness at a much quicker pace.

Lifting or Curling

Strong winds cause shingles to lift or curl by breaking the seal that holds them together. When this occurs, it allows water to seep underneath the shingles, leading to more severe damage. While lifted shingles can be resealed, curling ones almost always need to be replaced. In many instances, curling shingles are a sign to replace the entire roof because moisture has accumulated underneath.

Rips, Tears, & Punctures

After a heavy storm, especially if hail was involved, several of them could develop visible rips, tears, or punctures. However, if there was no hail, inspect the roof anyway. Heavy winds throw debris, such as tree limbs, into the roof, creating a lot of damage.
