Midwest winters can be harsh, but with enough preparation, you can make your home a cozy sanctuary from the cold. First and foremost, you’ll need to ensure your gas or electric furnace and boilers is in good condition. J.J. Smith Heating & Cooling in Cincinnati, OH, has served the community since 1982. Here, the team offers four essential fall and winter maintenance tips.

4 Ways to Make Sure Your Gas or Electric Furnace Is Ready for the Winter

1. Clean & Replace the Filters

The air filters are responsible for collecting dust, debris, and allergens that can affect indoor air quality. The screens also prevent these contaminants from clogging the unit. With clean filters, the system will last longer and run more efficiently. Replace them when they’re no longer transparent or about every three months. During the winter, check the filters about twice a month.

2. Check the Vents

Like the filters, the state of the vents can significantly affect efficiency. If one or more is clogged or dirty, the system will have to work harder to heat the home, resulting in higher electric bills and decreased comfort. Check the vents in the fall to ensure air is flowing correctly, or ask an HVAC technician to do it for you.

3. De-Clutter

Blocked pipes can be extremely dangerous, causing gas to build up inside the home. Throughout the season, make sure the outside unit is free of leaves, ice, and other debris.

4. Schedule an Inspection

Like cars, HVAC systems need regular tuneups to work at their best. For brand-new furnaces, routine inspections may also be part of the warranty terms. Schedule an inspection and tuneup at least once a year, preferably in the fall or spring. The technician will examine the unit and let you know if any issues must be resolved. Their training and experience enable them to find problems you may have missed.
