Many children require orthodontics to ensure a beautiful smile with straight teeth. In some cases, treatment is purely cosmetic. Other times, it’s necessary to align the bite to prevent problems down the road. The goal is to ensure that you can care for your teeth properly, too. But how do you know if you need braces?

When to Get Braces

1. Crowding

Teeth crowding is a very common problem that usually requires orthodontics. It occurs when teeth are situated so close together that it’s impossible to floss between them. They may even overlap. While the condition is often resolved with braces for cosmetic reasons, proper spacing between teeth is even more important for oral hygiene.

2. Crooked

orthodonticsStraight teeth are attractive, but crooked ones are considered unsightly, especially if the front teeth are affected. The condition also makes it difficult to brush and floss properly, which renders kids at greater risk for cavities. To correct the issue, dentists use braces or Invisalign®—a clear and lighter alternative.

3. Overbite or Underbite

When the upper front teeth are extended too far over the lower half, it’s called an overbite. It may look like the lips are protruding and can feel uncomfortable. When the lower jaw and teeth extend past the upper front teeth, it’s called an underbite—which also changes the person’s facial structure and smile. Both conditions can cause excessive wear on your teeth because you’re not biting properly.
