Scaffolding is a vital element in most construction jobs, from erecting a new high rise to repairing a bridge. Because it’s used in so many ways, there are several different types, each of which is designed to facilitate a particular job. Atlas Sales Company in Honolulu is the island’s go-to construction supply source. Here, the team explains the four main types of scaffolding to help you determine which is right for your next project.

4 Types of Scaffolding

1. Self-Supporting

Self-supporting scaffolds typically have worker platforms affixed to the ground parallel to the building’s exterior wall. The standards are connected using rope and ledgers. When the job requires ascending to extreme heights, this system may utilize braces to maintain stability. Braces, like ledgers, are connected to the standards using rope lashing. There are many types of self-supporting systems, including carpenter’s bracket, bricklayer’s squares, tube and coupler, and fabricated frame scaffolds. This category also includes mobile platforms. Some of these are manual, while others are mechanized, using truck-mounted lifts.

2. Suspension

This category includes boatswain’s chairs, double-point, float, and catenary scaffolds. Double-point or swing stage is the most common type of suspended scaffolding. It is often used in stone masonry because it is stronger and sturdier than other systems, including bricklayer’s scaffolding.

3. Elevated Work Platforms

Elevated work platforms, or aerial lifts, are battery or motor powered. They include mast climbing platforms, vehicle-mounted aerial (scissor) platforms, and vehicle-mounted aerial platforms with rotating bottoms, as well as articulating boom platforms, and vertical towers.  These are used to hoist materials or workers.

4. Multi-Point

Multi-point adjustable scaffolding, also called multi-point suspended scaffolding, contains multiple platforms suspended by two or more ropes connected to overhead supports. Like elevated work platforms, this system can be adjusted to facilitate work at different levels. This type is extremely versatile and can be used for anything from bridge construction to building inspections.
